Can I cancel or move away later? Website and data ownership explained

Yes, if the domain, the host and the files are already in your name. What to copy before you leave, and what I will not hold hostage.

Yes, you can leave, if the domain, the host and the files already sit in your name. A dental clinic or a salon that never received those logins is not cancelling. They are asking permission to exist.

I will not keep a kill switch on a page I built. That is the rule. Ask any other builder the same sentence before you pay them.

What you should be able to take

Do I lose control if someone else builds it is the lock. This page is the move.

  • Domain: unlock it, change the nameservers, keep the email that owns it.
  • Host: download the files, or point DNS at a new host you opened.
  • Content: hours, fees, photos, the copy you approved.
  • Lists: the enquiry export, the chat list, the booking log if we wrote one.

Who builds websites for small businesses in Delhi is who should have given you this pile at handover. One time or monthly is the invoice shape that often hides the pile.

I will not invent a typical India transfer fee. I will not invent how many days a registrar takes. Those are their clocks.

A cousin in Faridabad who still holds the GoDaddy login is not a small inconvenience. You cannot unlock a domain you cannot see. The move starts with that inbox, not with a new designer. Ask the cousin to add your mail as the owner, or to transfer the account, while you are still speaking. After a fight, that mail is harder to get.

What you cannot take

You cannot take a theme licence that was only in their account, if they never bought it in yours. You cannot take a plugin they rented. A Google listing stays with the person who verified it. You cannot take a profile that was never in your name. Google’s edit guide is the public steps for hours and photos on that profile.

A voice list or a chat list we wrote is text. You can take the text. You cannot take a third-party number that was never in your name. If a billed number was part of keeping it running, that bill was supposed to be in your name from the start.

A Wix lease sitting in someone else’s account is not a site you can pack. Export whatever that builder lets you download. Treat the rest as a rebuild. I will say that before you pay me to replace it. Paying another year of rent does not turn their login into yours.

How to test the exit before you need it

Do a dry run while you are still speaking.

  • Log in to the domain. Change nothing. Confirm the email.
  • Log in to the host. Confirm the card.
  • Download a zip of the files, or confirm you can.

If any step needs them to “send it later”, you do not have an exit. You have a promise.

On my websites those steps work without me. The pricing floor for that page is Rs 30,000. A NexBuilt site is usually under two weeks. Leaving later is not an extra product.

If the cousin cannot open GoDaddy on a shared call, stop the redesign talk. Ownership is the first job. Colour is later.

When family holds the registrar

A Greater Noida salon whose cousin still pays the GoDaddy card is one fight away from a dark door. The card expires. The mail is theirs. You find out on a Saturday when the URL dies. Do the shared call now. Add your mail. Change the card to one you hold. Write the recovery questions on paper you keep.

A Wix lease is a different trap. The page can look fine on wifi. The account still is not yours. If they stop paying, the page goes with them. Ask whose mail gets the renewal. If the answer is a freelancer who left for Pune, you are already late. Export, then decide whether to stay on that builder under a login you open.

I will not invent how often cousins disappear. I have seen the lock often enough to ask for the dry run before I talk about colour.

Downsides of leaving

The new person can break the page. The host can be slower. People leave after three seconds either way. Moving is not a ranking trick. Google’s local ranking notes list relevance, distance and prominence. A migration will not buy the pack.

You will spend evenings on DNS. That is a real cost. I will not turn it into a rupee figure I cannot see.

For the dry run itself, write if you want those three logins walked through.

What to pack before you write anyone

Export the three logins and one zip. Put them on a drive you own. Then decide if you are leaving.

Then get in touch if the dry run failed and you want the lock named in plain words. Bring the accounts you can open. I will say you can move, you are stuck until they hand over, or you should stay because the page already works.

The ones people actually ask.

If I stop paying you, does the site vanish?

No. The host is in your name. You can point the domain at someone else. I do not keep a kill switch.

What about the enquiry list and the chat log?

What we stored for you is yours to export. I will not hold a spreadsheet to force a renewal.

Can I move a builder site the same way?

Only if the builder account is yours. If the account is theirs, moving means starting again, and I will say that before you pay me to replace it.
