What does it mean for a website to be found by ChatGPT?
ChatGPT search can show links to pages it is allowed to crawl. What OpenAI actually says, and what a Delhi shop can check without a promised citation.
Being “found by ChatGPT” means a page can be crawled and, sometimes, shown as a link when someone asks a question there. It does not mean a dental clinic or a gym is read out as the answer, and it does not mean I can sell you that slot.
OpenAI’s own help on ChatGPT search says ranking uses several factors designed to find reliable, relevant information, and a top slot cannot be promised. To be included, allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl your site, and ensure the host allows traffic from their published IP addresses.
What that means on a Thursday night
Someone in Saket asks a chat for a gym with a trial. They may get a short paragraph and a few links. If your page is blocked, slow, or empty of fees, you are easy to skip. If your page never existed, there is nothing to crawl.
This is not Google’s map pack. How to show up for dentist near me is Google’s local notes. AEO and GEO are the labels people now stick on both. Schema markup is one way to label the page for machines that read the HTML.
I will not tell you how often Delhi NCR customers ask ChatGPT before they open Maps. I have not counted them. I will not invent a percentage.
A Rajouri Garden screenshot is not a rank
A gym owner near Rajouri Garden Metro once forwarded a ChatGPT reply that named two other gyms and skipped his. He asked me to “fix the ranking”. The page he sent was a login wall on a builder preview. There was nothing public to crawl. I did not sell him a citation. I told him to put fees and hours on a live URL first.
A dental clinic in Green Park can do the same check tonight. Ask the chat the sentence a stranger would type. Write down whether your URL appeared. If it did not, look at robots.txt and the host before you buy more words. If it did, keep the page true. A citation of last year’s Sunday still wastes the tap.
I will not turn that one screenshot into a Delhi trend. One reply is one reply. Run the same question next month if you want a second mark. Two marks are still not a study.
What you can actually check
- The site is on the public web, not behind a login.
- robots.txt does not disallow OAI-Searchbot if you want to be included. OpenAI’s help names that bot.
- The host or CDN is not silently blocking their IPs. That check sits with whoever holds the host login.
- The page states hours and what you do in text. A photo of a rate card is a picture, not a sentence a crawler can quote.
A website that fails the phone test still fails a crawler that has to wait. People leave after three seconds. I will not invent a timeout for OAI-Searchbot. I will say a page that never arrives is a bad bet for anyone.
Rs 30,000 on pricing is the site floor. It is not a ChatGPT placement fee. I do not sell placement.
What I will not tell you
I will not tell you a special file on the server makes ChatGPT prefer you. I will not tell you I have a private index. I will not tell you buying more words on the page buys a citation.
I will not tell you blocking GPTBot and allowing OAI-Searchbot is required. OpenAI documents those as separate choices. The search help page I cited is about being available in search, not about training. Read that page if you want the split. I will not turn it into a fear pitch.
Downsides
A citation can be wrong. Assistants compress. Your fee can come out dated if the page is dated. Keeping the page true is still your week.
Some people will never use ChatGPT. They will use Maps. A listing with last year’s hours still loses them. Do not rebuild a site to impress a bot while the pin is wrong.
What to do this week
Ask ChatGPT the question a stranger would ask, once. Write down whether your URL appeared. That is one check, not a rank.
Then get in touch if the site cannot even be opened or crawled. Bring the URL and what the bot returned. I will name a figure for a readable page, or I will tell you the page already reads and the ChatGPT worry is not a build.
