A NexBuilt guide · 5 September 2026
My competitor down the road is getting more walk ins than me. What are they doing differently?
The boring reasons a nearby shop gets more walk ins, without guessing their ad spend or inventing a secret.
Call both numbers on a busy hour, open both listings, and open both sites on a phone. The usual differences I can actually check are whether the phone is picked up, whether the listing hours are today’s, and whether the site opens.
I cannot see their books, so I cannot tell you their ad spend or their close rate. I will not invent that they run ads.
That is a duller answer than a secret. It is also the one I can stand behind for a dental clinic or a restaurant on the same stretch in Delhi NCR. I will not invent that they run ads. I have not opened their account.
I cannot know their numbers
A clinic in Green Park and the one two gates down can look identical from the footpath. One chair is full. One is not. The quiet owner wants a reason that feels like strategy. Spend, a clever agency, a pack they bought.
I do not have those figures. Neither do you, unless they told you. Treating a guess as a plan is how you buy the wrong thing.
Act like a stranger this week. Call both numbers at 11am and at 7pm. Open both listings. Open both sites on a mid range Android over 4G. Write down what happened. That list is the gap you can close, not their profit.
If those three checks look the same, the difference is probably not a website. It is reviews, the door, the wait, the price on the board, or the fact that they are closer. I cannot tidy that from a laptop.
The phone
Walk ins often start as a call. A patient wants a slot after work. A table for four at 8:30. If nobody picks up the phone, they try the next shop. You already know this when you are gloved up or in the middle of service.
Call yourself from a number that is not saved. Call them. Note the ring, the pickup, the voicemail. Do it on a busy hour, not on Monday morning when the desk is free.
If they pick up and you do not, that is a difference I can believe. It does not need software to start. A person at the desk, or a rule that the floor hears the phone, is the first fix. If the person is the work, you have a different page to read. I will not pretend a new website answers the line.
The listing hours
When I stand in for a stranger, the first check is often the listing: the area, the trade, the hours, the pin. If your listing says you close at 6 and you now run till 8, you look shut. If theirs is today’s, they look open.
I cannot tell you that hours alone put them above you. I can tell you a listing with last year’s Sunday, a dead phone, or a pin on the wrong floor is a reason a stranger walks past. Why you are not showing on Google Maps is the longer set of checks. Start with verify, hours, and one honest address.
Do not add a second profile to “beat” them, or stuff the name with the colony. Google’s representation rules ask for one profile per business and the name on the signage, not a string of colonies. Keep the door, the hours and the phone true. Then look again.
The site on a phone
If they have a page that opens and you have a theme that takes a wait longer than they will sit, the stranger who wanted fees or the menu left. People leave after three seconds. If theirs is already on screen and yours is still a spinner, that is a difference I can check. Why the website is slow on a phone is the measurement, not a vibe.
Open both sites on 4G, first visit, no wifi. Write the wait. If yours is still loading and theirs already shows the number, that is a difference I can check. If both open, the site is probably not why their door is busier.
A rebuild of the brand will not fix a page that never arrived. A new coat of paint on the same heavy stack often stays slow. The websites floor for a page that opens is Rs 30,000 on the pricing page. That is a build floor, not a promise of more walk ins.
Messages that are not the door
Some “walk ins” were never going to walk. They wrote on Instagram or the form on Sunday and heard nothing. The shop that wrote back took the slot. That is not a mystery about their ads either.
Booking automation is the inbox job: Instagram, the form and WhatsApp in one place, the usual questions answered, the rest chased. It starts at Rs 15,000 on the same pricing page. It will not fill a restaurant that is in the wrong place. It will stop two people taking the same table because nobody saw the thread.
If you already answer the same day, you may not need that. I will say so.
What this does not explain
I will not tell you they are winning because they have a better logo. I will not tell you a more expensive site brings more patients.
A closer shop can still beat a perfect page. A restaurant with a queue can still lose the reservation line during service. Pick the difference you can see this week.
Then get in touch if you want a second pair of eyes on the three checks, not a story about their budget. A short call. What the phone did, what the listing says, what the phone test of the site did. NexBuilt will say which of those is the hole, or NexBuilt will say the hole is not something NexBuilt builds and stop bothering you.
